Zarya woke up inside the palace, lying in the same bed where she’d slept before. Her surroundings were quiet except for the dull roar of crashing waves outside. Her body didn’t so much ache as it felt like it had been drained of everything.

She recalled the last thing she remembered. Looking up at Rabin as she fainted in his arms. Had she imagined those words he’d said?

I lied. I feel it, too.

What did that mean, and why had he chosen that particular moment to enlighten her and fuck with her head a little more?

She slid out of bed and slowly stood. Her limbs felt hollowed out like someone had removed all her bones and piled them into a corner. She padded over to the mirror, noting the dust that coated her hair and clothing.

She looked the same. A strange sense of relief flooded through her. What had she expected? Horns or a tail to sprout now that she had embraced her darkness? But even with no visible change on the outside, she couldn’t quell the thoughts running through her mind. A truth that had been scraping at her subconscious for some time now.

The blight wanted her and had been chasing her for months. Not months. Maybe years. The magic she once believed benign and useless was inexplicably tied to the entity plaguing Daragaab. She was sure of it.

Did this mean she was the one who could stop it?

Did Row and Dhawan know this was possible?

After what she’d just experienced, she didn’t think she’d be strong enough on her own. Yes, she’d forced it to retreat, but it had nearly destroyed her. If it hadn’t been for Rabin… She shook her head. Everything was piling up, making it impossible to clear her thoughts.

She slipped on a pair of shoes left by the door and padded through the palace halls. Today, they were quiet, absent of their typical bustle. Only the palace servants moved about their duties with less zeal than usual. She’d never seen it this empty in all her months here.

Zarya walked to the courtyard, where the door to the Jai Tree stood ajar.

Inside, Row stood with the rest of the Chiranjivi as well as Rabin, Yasen, Vikram, and Aarav. Everyone was talking at once—or rather, arguing. The topic of discussion was clear. This had been the most aggressive attack on Dharati yet, and they were running out of time and options.

Vikram assured everyone that Amrita’s barrier of protection was once again in place and that she’d learned from this mistake. But her enchantment had been compromised, and her magic wouldn’t protect them forever.

The queendom had to be evacuated, and the blight had to be stopped once and for all.

Rabin leaned against the wall, his keen eyes quietly observing the conversation. He spotted Zarya first, standing straighter when he saw her. They exchanged a private look, and she studied him from head to toe. When he’d taken her hand, her nearly-spent magic had recovered, surging up with enough force to beat back the blight.
